GeoIP

I can not help but feel that GeoIP is one of the biggest scams out there that people are not talking about. Who are the major consumers of GeoIP? Content distributors. And how is it used? To lock people out of the content they are distributing.

This is especially annoying when the GeoIP companies have incorrect data in their databases. I have IPv6 turned on, because it makes sense to have it on and strive to move to it. IPv4 ran out of addresses a long time ago and there are all sorts of bad solutions to the issue of running out of addresses. IPv6 does not have that issue and would actually require people to deploy good security, like decent firewalls and not just leave everything wide open. IPv4 leads to crappy situations like double NAT and other kludges.

I was however pleasantly surprised when I contacted the last in a long list of GeoIP companies to get their data straight. They responded, and they fixed the issue. Time to go out there and hunt down the GeoIP troll that supplies Netflix, because that one is consistently wrong. (I would like the EU to slap these GeoIP database companies with a hefty fine if more than a percent of their database is incorrect. That should make sure that this crap is fixed if they are going to carry on using it.)
